Insurance Requirements

No auto insurance?  No registration in the State of Virginia!  It’s that simple.  Virginia requires minimum auto insurance coverage of  $20,000 for property damage, $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person, and $50,000 for bodily injury or death of 2 persons or more.  Furthermore, your Virginia auto insurance policy must be issued by an agency that is licensed to do business in the State of Virginia. The Virginia DMV uses the Electronic Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Reporting process, which means that the Virginia DMV is notified by Virginia auto insurance companies when liability insurance is issued or canceled for vehicles registered in Virginia.

The Virginia DMV does allow a registered vehicle to remain uninsured if the driver pays a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee, in addition to other registration fees, at the time of vehicle registration.  This is not Virginia auto insurance!  Instead, if you are in an accident, the liability falls directly and solely upon you, the driver, and you are responsible for all damage incurred at the time of the accident.  The uninsured motor vehicle fee must be paid every time you are up for registration renewal.
